Where to Stay in Ubud

The city center of Ubud is vibrant and full of activity, while the outskirts provide a serene and peaceful escape. The city is not very walkable, due to small, congested roads, however, ride-hailing apps allow you to get around with ease.

Explore Ubud

Trekking

Escape the bustling city center to wander through serene rice fields and charming local villages, immersing yourself in the tranquil and picturesque landscapes that define this enchanting region.

Sari Organik Walk
Discover the tranquil Sari Organik Walk, a hidden oasis just minutes from Ubud's bustling streets. Wander through palm-lined roads and lush rice fields, surrounded by small shops and cafes. If you need directions, locals are happy to help you find the hidden entrance. This is also where you can find the Ubud Yoga House & Belluna coworking.

Sweet Orange Warung Walk
Running parallel to the serene Sari Organik Walk, this trail guides you through peaceful rice fields, providing a tranquil retreat from the vibrant energy of Ubud's streets. This is my favorite spot to walk my puppy.

Penestenean Stairs
Click here to navigate to the Penestenean stairs, your gateway to Ubud's most charming Bohemian neighborhood. Wander through the rice fields (and maybe a few expat’s yards). This spot remains largely a secret.

Campuhan Ridge Walk
Experience the beauty of Ubud's jungle with a sunset stroll along Ubud’s most popular trail. I find the walk itself to be a bit overrated as the dense foliage blocks the valley view, however, the area it spits you out at is beautiful.

Ubud Waterfalls, Rice Terraces & Temples

Ubud beckons with its breathtaking natural beauty, where dense jungles, sprawling rice terraces, captivating waterfalls, and ancient temples await your exploration. Escape the bustling city center to discover serene rice fields, majestic waterfalls, and sacred temples, immersing yourself in the tranquil and picturesque landscapes that define this enchanting region.

Goa Gajah Temple
Goa Gajah Temple, also known as the Elephant Cave, is a significant archaeological site in Bali featuring a mysterious cave, ancient stone carvings, and a tranquil garden with fountains and bathing pools.

Pura Gunung Kawi Temple
Pura Gunung Kawi is an ancient temple complex in Bali, showcasing impressive 11th-century rock-cut shrines carved into the cliff face, surrounded by lush rice terraces and tranquil rivers.

Taman Beji Griya Temple
This lesser-known spot is a serene and spiritual destination in Bali, featuring a series of picturesque waterfalls, lush greenery, and sacred purification ceremonies, offering visitors a tranquil retreat to connect with nature and Balinese culture.

Jatiuluwih Rice Terraces
I find the Tegalalang Rice Terraces to be a bit too touristy and underwhelming. Instead, I urge you to drive an hour to Jatiluwih, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These expansive and stunning rice terraces offer a more authentic experience, free from the crowds.

Tibumana Waterfall
Once a hidden gem, Tibumana Waterfall has gained popularity in recent years. The best way to enjoy this picture-perfect waterfall is early in the morning, allowing you to relish the scenic drive and serene falls all to yourself.

Leke Leke Waterfall
Located approximately an hour North of Ubud, Leke Leke awaits amidst lush jungle foliage. Be warned: their are hundreds of stairs.

NungNung Waterfall
NungNung, situated North of Ubud, stands as one of Bali’s largest and most formidable cascades.

Note: I tend to steer away from spots that I find to be too touristy, crowded, or inauthentic, thus, you may find some of the top attractions missing from my list. This is my personal opinion. Here is what I would opt to skip:

Tegenungan Waterfall, Kanto Lampo Waterfall, Saraswati Temple, Tirta Empul Temple, Tegalalang Rice Terraces, the Ubud Art Market, and the Kecak Fire Dance.

Panoramic view of the iconic rice terraces in Ubud, Bali, showcasing the area's rich agricultural heritage and breathtaking landscape.

The Sacred Monkey Forest

Despite its popularity, the Sacred Monkey Forest is still well worth a visit. The forest is beautiful and expansive, making it a joy to explore. However, the monkeys here can be quite aggressive, so be sure to remove jewelry and sunglasses beforehand. Keep your bag secure and your phone tucked away to avoid any unwanted attention from our furry friends, who are extremely smart and will steal your items to bargain for food.

Sangeh Monkey Forest
Located about 45 minutes from Ubud, the Sangeh Monkey Forest is much smaller but offers a uniquely pleasant experience. The monkeys here are the friendliest I've encountered in Bali, and your entrance fee includes a big bag of peanuts to feed them. They are not aggressive and are far more interested in the peanuts than your valuables. I highly recommend visiting this charming spot.

The Ubud Monkey Forests

Unbeknownst to many, Ubud boasts two monkey forests: the well-known Sacred Monkey Forest in the city center and the lesser-known Sangeh Monkey Forest.
