Where to Stay in Bali - Unique & Boutique Hotels

Traveling responsibly is more important than ever, especially in a place like Bali. After spending over 18 months here and staying at more than 60+ hotels, villas, homestays, and hostels, I've developed a "unique & boutique" approach to where I stay. I’m drawn to small luxury hotels that prioritize sustainability and the finer details over large resorts with endless pools and sprawling restaurants. It’s a personal preference, but the intimate experience you get from a thoughtfully designed boutique stay almost always outshines the big chain resorts. Here are 7 of my favorites to add to your Bali itinerary.

Hotel Sages, Canggu

Hotel Sages in Canggu is an absolute dream. This Bohemian Mediterranean retreat, tucked between Batu Bolong and Pererenan, offers a serene escape just 10 minutes from Canggu’s vibrant buzz. With only nine uniquely designed rooms, this boutique gem creates an intimate atmosphere where relaxation comes naturally. Whether you're lounging by the stunning pool (often with it all to yourself) or soaking in the tranquil vibe, Hotel Sages perfectly blends access to lively spots with the peace and quiet you crave for a restorative stay. It's easily one of my top picks in Canggu.

Batu Karang Lembongan Resort & Day Spa, nUsa Lembongan

Batu Karang is hands down my favorite stay on Nusa Lembongan—an idyllic tropical island 30 minutes off the coast of Bali. This dreamy boutique hotel blends luxury and laid-back island vibes with stunning ocean views from every room. With three pools overlooking the sea, mornings here start with a splash of serenity. The Deck, their waterfront café, is perfect for sunset cocktails, while the whiskey bar serves up some of the best old fashioneds around. spend my days here with an ice cream from their on-site parlor, strolling along the shores of Jungut Batu. The location is ideal, set along the stretch of Lembongan nicknamed "Millionaire’s Mile." Whether it’s a romantic escape or honeymoon bliss you’re after, Batu Karang is the kind of splurge that leaves you floating in pure Bali bliss. The warm staff and enchanting atmosphere make it a place you’ll never want to leave.

Munduk Cabins, Munduk

Perched high in Bali’s serene mountains, Munduk Cabins by Desa Hay retreats offers a luxury escape with breathtaking views of lush peaks and distant sea. The elevated location brings cooler temps and cozy vibes, enhanced by thoughtfully designed cabins featuring plush beds, pre-made espresso martinis, and entertainment options like books and yoga mats. The on-site Clove Bar and room service from Ulekan add amazing food to the long list of things that Munduk Cabins excels at.

Evenings here are pure magic—think stunning sunsets, perfectly heated hot tubs, and fireside relaxation. This is my favorite place to stay in all of Bali, and even though it’s a bit of a splurge, we come back here every year.

Casa Pohon, Ubud

If you’re searching for a place that truly captures the essence of Ubud, look no further than Casa Pohon. Nestled amidst Ubud’s iconic rice fields and wrapped in ancient vines, this hidden gem is the definition of serene escape. The attention to detail here is unmatched—from handcrafted wooden furniture that brings nature indoors to a fridge thoughtfully stocked with local teas and artisanal spirits. It’s the kind of setting where time slows down, inviting you to unwind, reflect, and reconnect. Every corner of Casa Pohon is designed for tranquility, making it impossible not to feel at peace. Our stay was nothing short of extraordinary, and we’re already counting the days until we return to this tranquil haven that perfectly embodies Ubud’s soul.

Occulus, Kintamani

For a luxurious stay in Kintamani, Oculus is hard to beat. This boutique hotel offers spacious suites, a soothing spa, two charming restaurants, and stunning sunset views. Our evenings were spent gathered around the bonfire, savoring old fashioned’s and enjoying cigars. The location is ideal, placing you close to the best local attractions and cafes, with Ubud just an hour away. What truly stood out was the exceptional service. During our stay, we rescued a stray puppy, and despite the hotel’s no-pets policy, a kind staff member took the pup home overnight until we could get her to a vet. It’s little acts of kindness like this that make Oculus more than just a place to stay—it’s an experience.
