The Slow, Bali — Hotel Review

Where design, music, and Canggu’s energy collide—an urban jungle retreat in the heart of it all.

Tucked just up the road from Canggu’s busiest beach, Batu Bolong, The Slow is one of those iconic hotels that’s topped every “where to stay in Bali” list for years. Step inside its leafy, light-filled retreat, where raw concrete, lush greenery, and slatted woodwork play with the shifting light—and it’s easy to see why it’s been featured everywhere from coffee table books to Condé Nast Traveler and Vogue.

While new hotels and luxury villas seem to pop up on every corner in Canggu, The Slow has managed to hold its place at the top. I recently spent a weekend here after their latest renovation—and here’s the lowdown.

The Location

When it comes to location, it doesn’t get more central than The Slow. For better or worse, it puts you right in the heart of the action—perched directly on Jalan Batu Bolong, just a short walk from nightlife hotspots like Motel Mexicola, Old Man’s, and Sandbar.

Head in the opposite direction, and you’ll find yourself at an even busier crossroads, where Luigi’s Hot Pizza and Deus Temple of Enthusiasm keep the energy (and the music) going late into the night.

If you’re looking to be surrounded by Canggu’s vibrant buzz and nightlife, you’ll love the location. For me personally, by Sunday morning, the combo of motorbikes roaring by and a mild hangover made for a rough wake-up call.

The Rooms

The Slow offers a handful of different room types, but since the property is boutique-sized and doesn’t have a shared pool, booking a Pool Suite is the way to go.

We followed a minimalist hallway where the door to our room was hidden flush within the wall—opening up into what felt like an urban sanctuary. While grey cinderblock walls might sound cold on paper, here they felt elevated: softened by thoughtfully curated artwork, lush greenery just outside, and a steady hum of house music playing from built-in speakers.

The mini bar was fully stocked with a proper cocktail kit—ideal for prepping before a night out or winding down with a nightcap. (Highly recommend taking advantage of the complimentary espresso martini kit.)

The room’s design leans into contrasts: a wicker chair draped with a fur throw sits in one corner, while polished concrete floors, a concrete couch opposite the bed, and moody lighting ground the space. Despite the urban materials, natural light filters through the lush garden and woodwork details, keeping the space from ever feeling stark.

The private pool was easily the star of the show—wrapped in jungle greenery, with linen curtains billowing in the breeze. Slide open the glass doors and you get the seamless open-concept living that Bali is famous for.

One of my favorite little design moments? The shower, where frosted glass blurred the outlines of palm leaves outside, creating a soft, dreamy glow.

The only downside: when I visited, the hot water only lasted about 60 seconds—a small detail, but at this price point, and with the The Slow’s reputation, I expected the details to live up to the overall experience.

The Food & Drinks

The Slow’s restaurant is fantastic—and absolutely worth a visit, whether you’re staying on property or just passing through Canggu.

The menu leans global with a fresh, inventive twist. A personal favorite: the Pad Thai, perfectly balanced and packed with flavor. Their cocktails are equally impressive, making it an ideal spot for a sunset drink or a casual dinner.

Visually, the restaurant is a standout along Batu Bolong—design-forward, effortlessly cool, and just as much a part of The Slow’s appeal as the rooms themselves.

The Property

The Slow is the definition of a true boutique hotel, offering just a handful of thoughtfully designed rooms. The property also houses a restaurant and bar that doubles as an art gallery and occasionally hosts events, adding a creative energy to the space.

If you’re looking for a sprawling resort with seven pools, a spa, and a full-service gym—this isn’t the place for you. But what it lacks in amenities, it makes up for in location and atmosphere. The Slow puts you steps from Canggu’s best beaches, nightlife, shops, and restaurants, making it an ideal home base for travelers who want to be out exploring rather than tucked away at a resort.

Personally, I love boutique hotels in Canggu for exactly this reason—you want to get out, eat at the incredible cafés, pop into day spas, and hop between beach clubs. The Slow lets you do just that, while giving you a stylish, low-key place to come back to.

The Service

The service during this stay was good—warm, helpful, and attentive throughout. However, in full transparency, I did have a less-than-ideal experience about a year ago. When I arrived for check-in during a previous booking, I was informed that the Pool Suite I had reserved was unavailable, and I was offered a standard room instead. I ultimately chose to decline and stay elsewhere at that time.

The Surroundings

Old Man’s is a famous sunset hangout, while Motel Mexicola brings the energy with late-night Mexican food and lively parties. Everyone seems to end up at Batu Bolong Beach for sunset—where the atmosphere is casual, electric, and a little chaotic in the best way. For a slightly more upscale evening, The Lawn is just down the road, offering cocktails, beachside lounging, and live music under the stars.

When it comes to food, Moana Fish Eatery serves some of the best seafood in Canggu, and influencer favorites like Crate Café and Penny Lane are both a quick five-minute drive away.

If you’re in need of a spa day, Golddust Beauty Lounge—famous for their 24k Gold Facial—and AMO Day Spa are both close by, perfect for a little post-sun pampering.

My review:
The Slow is a Canggu icon for a reason. It’s stylish without trying too hard, and perfectly positioned for anyone who wants to dive into Canggu’s vibrant food, nightlife, and beach scene. I loved the design-forward rooms, the moody lighting, the private pool, and the feeling of stepping into a little sanctuary just steps from the chaos outside.

That said, it’s definitely not a spot for light sleepers or those seeking a totally zen escape—the energy of Batu Bolong buzzes around you. But if you’re looking for a stay that’s equal parts creative, cool, and connected to the beating heart of Canggu, The Slow delivers.
