9 Best Beaches in Puglia, Italy
This summer, I ventured down to Puglia, a sun-soaked region in southern Italy that’s long been a favorite among locals for their summer holidays—but still flies under the radar for many international travelers.
Unlike hotspots like Cinque Terre or the Amalfi Coast, Puglia offers a more laid-back and authentic Italian escape. Tucked into the southernmost tip of the heel of the boot, this charming region is dotted with whitewashed towns, endless olive groves, luxury boutique masserias (farmhouses turned hotels), and a rugged coastline made for summer dreaming. From hidden rocky coves to long stretches of golden sand along the Salento Coast, the beaches quickly became one of my favorite things about Puglia. I spent three weeks road-tripping the region—and these are my top beach picks.
Cala dell’Acquaviva
This Pinterest-perfect cove on the Adriatic Coast of Puglia is a hidden gem and the perfect escape from the wind. With bright turquoise water that looks more like Mallorca than Southern Italy, and a laid-back beach bar right on the sand, it’s an ideal spot to post up for the afternoon with a few Aperol Spritzes and soak in the sun.
Torre Sant’Andrea
Torre Sant’Andrea isn’t your typical beach—it’s more of a scenic swimming spot—but it quickly became our favorite place to cool off in southern Puglia. Located along the Salento Coast, this stretch is known for its dramatic rock formations, natural arches, and crystal-clear aquamarine water. There’s nothing better than spending a few slow hours here, floating in the sea and soaking up the southern Italian sun.
Torre dell’Orso
Just around the corner from Torre Sant’Andrea is Torre dell’Orso, a long stretch of soft sandy beach framed by cliffs and dotted with colorful umbrellas in the summer months. It’s one of the most popular beach destinations on the Adriatic Coast, and for good reason—gentle waves, clear water, and plenty of space to spread out for the day.
La Monachile
Arguably the most famous beach in Puglia, the viral Lama Monachile (also known as Cala Monachile) in Polignano a Mare was easily one of my favorites. This rocky cove tucked between cliffs gets absolutely packed in the summer, but it’s still worth a visit—especially for a quick dip to cool down. My favorite part? The on-the-beach bartender mixing up Aperol and Limoncello spritzers straight from a cooler. It doesn’t get more iconic than that.
Il Ciolo
Il Ciolo is a hidden cove on the Adriatic Coast, tucked beneath a dramatic bridge near Gagliano del Capo. With crystal-clear water, a small grotto just around the corner, and scenic hiking trails above, this spot offers the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. Whether you’re diving in for a swim or exploring the rugged cliffs, Il Ciolo is absolutely worth a stop on your Puglia road trip.
Spiaggia di Pescoluse
Spiaggia di Pescoluse, often called “The Maldives of Salento,” is one of the most iconic beaches on the Ionian Sea. Known for its powdery white sand and shallow, turquoise water, this stretch of coastline lives up to the nickname.
Grotta della Poesia
Grotta della Poesia is one of Puglia’s most stunning natural swimming holes, known for its crystal-clear turquoise water and dramatic limestone cliffs. While I’d read online that swimming was no longer allowed, when I visited in June, the grotto was full of people diving in and enjoying the water.
Porto Miggiano
Porto Miggiano is a small, cliff-backed beach cove near Santa Cesarea Terme on the Adriatic Coast, known for its dramatic beauty and clear, deep blue water. The beach itself is tucked between golden limestone cliffs, with a staircase leading down to a tiny strip of sand and a few sunbeds in the summer. It’s more of a scenic swimming spot than a lounging beach—but if you’re into exploring hidden coves and diving into the sea, Porto Miggiano is a must.
Cala Fontanelle
Cala Fontanelle is a hidden gem I stumbled upon while visiting the nearby beach club Bagno Marino Archi, a more well-known spot in the area. Just down the stairs, you’ll find a peaceful cove with natural pools, perfect for a refreshing swim and a bit of sunbathing on the rocks.
