I haven’t really said much regarding the current state of affairs in this country. I think that as a white person, who is undoubtedly privileged, there comes a time when simply offering our condolences and support (or worse, silence) isn’t enough. Let me start by saying that this is not an isolated incident. This is not simply a “bad seed” in the police system. This is a result of centuries of systemic & institutional racism that has not been put to a stop. Our nation is quite literally built on the subjugation of black people. Over half of the founding father’s were slave owners, and as such, sought to protect their privilege through the creation of our fundamental rights. When slavery ended, Jim Crow laws took it’s place. When segregation ended, mandatory minimums and the war on drugs took it’s place. Though less obvious than in the time of slavery & Jim Crow, racism is still very much intact and embedded in the fabric of our nation. As a white person, it is very easy to ignore this and stay silent. It’s easy to blame police brutality on a few bad cops in the system. It’s easy to throw a picture up on social media and avoid talking about it because it’s uncomfortable. Nevertheless, the things that are most uncomfortable to talk about are oftentimes what need to be discussed most. As a white person, I will never fully understand what black people are going through at this time; however, I am willing to do my best to enact meaningful change, by using my privilege for good, and I urge you all to to the same. We must go beyond posting pictures to our instagram stories, and recognize our privilege, educate ourselves, donate, sign petitions, call our local officials, and vote responsibly. Above all, we must acknowledge that this is a large scale problem. People of color face racism each day, ranging anywhere from micro aggressions to full blown human rights violations. It won’t be easy, as there are still unfortunately many people who harbor hate, but it must end. #blackouttuesday

New Blog Post: Gaining 30 pounds (and losing 8). It's been quite a while since I have last written. In fact, I was debating whether or not to even renew my blog on wordpress. I started bohemianbela.com with a bang; a high dose of vulnerability and realness that I wanted to carry on as I cultivated my writing here. In all truthfulness, I didn't want this blog to be a space of 100% seriousness. I wanted to mix some fun posts in about beauty, fashion, and travel as well, but over the course of the past two years, I have found that when I write about something real, the posts do much better, and I feel much better. I want my blog to be a space of genuineness, rather than another social media platform that creates a false sense of reality and unrealistic beauty standards. Link in my bio.
