Munduk Cabins, Bali — Hotel Review

Munduk Cabins Bali hotel review, boutique hotels bali, amazing places to stay bali, munduk bali accommodation with scenic views, munduk bali hotels near munduk waterfall, hidden spots bali, special hotels bali.

An intimate mountain retreat where romance, nature, and quiet luxury meet.

After two years of living in and traveling through Bali, I’ve explored nearly every corner of this island—and yet, it continues to awe me with its beauty, depth, and sheer unpredictability. We all know the big three: Ubud, forever etched into pop culture thanks to Eat, Pray, Love; Canggu, Bali’s booming beachside expat hub stretching north from Kuta and Seminyak; and Uluwatu, once a sleepy cliffside surf town frequented by legends like Kelly Slater and Gerry Lopez.

But head into the mountains, and you’ll find something different. Munduk is a region that remains blissfully under the radar—a quiet highland escape where time slows down and the air feels crisper. So if you’ve ever hesitated to visit Bali because “it’s too busy” or “too touristy,” allow me to introduce you to the antidote. And when you do decide to make your way here, I have just the place for you.

Tucked away in the lush northern mountains, about two hours from Ubud, lies Munduk Cabins, a boutique hotel that nails the art of understated luxury. The distance alone is enough to deter most travelers—many deem it “too far,” especially when Bali’s hotspots are clustered along the southern coast. But that’s exactly what makes Munduk so special. It remains blissfully untouched, offering a side of Bali few take the time to see. And let’s be real—two hours is hardly a journey, especially for a native Californian like myself.

The Location

Munduk sits about three hours north of Denpasar, home to Bali’s only international airport. Perched at 800 meters (roughly 2,600 feet) above sea level, this highland region feels worlds apart from the island’s sun-soaked beaches and bustling towns. Once you pass Ubud, the road begins to climb—winding through emerald rice terraces alive with the buzz of cicadas and the rhythm of local farm life.

Not much has changed here over the last 30 years. A handful of boutique hotels have emerged, but for the most part, Munduk remains untouched, with traditional Balinese culture woven into everyday life.

As you ascend into the clouds, you’ll pass moss-covered forests, monkeys perched along stone walls, and fields of blooming hydrangeas shrouded in morning mist. It’s hauntingly beautiful.

Munduk Cabins feels like a world away—peaceful, elevated, deeply restorative—yet it’s still within reach of the region’s most iconic sights, from twin lakes and waterfalls to scenic temples tucked in the hills. The cooler temperatures, especially during Bali’s rainy season from October to March, only add to the moody, cinematic charm of the highlands.

The Rooms

Munduk Cabins is an intimate escape with just six suites: five private cabins and one two-bedroom villa. Upon check-in, you’ll follow elevated wooden pathways that wind through the trees—think upscale treehouse vibes, with sleek iron railings and beautifully finished hardwood underfoot. Each cabin feels secluded and serene, with generous space and complete privacy.

I’ve stayed here twice, and if you’re looking to be wowed, book one of the Premium Cabin Suites. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame panoramic views of the mountains and the Indian Ocean just beyond Lovina—a living watercolor, layered with misty peaks and a lavender haze as the sun sets each evening.

Every element has been thoughtfully considered, from the architectural design to the small, luxurious touches that make the space feel less like a hotel and more like your dream cabin hideaway.

Though children are welcome, this is—without question—a romantic destination. Couples will feel especially at home here.

Each cabin is equipped with a small kitchenette stocked with good imported wine (a true rarity in Bali, where quality bottles are hard to come by due to steep import taxes), curated snacks, and even pre-batched espresso martinis that are dangerously good. Premium suites feature a full-size kitchen—the kind you could easily host a holiday dinner in—along with designer furnishings and high-end finishes that give the space a polished, homey feel.

But what truly sets Munduk Cabins apart is their obsessive attention to detail: cloud-like towels, extra plush robes, luxury bedding, yoga mats, and board games for cozy nights in. Sunsets are best enjoyed with smoked cocktails delivered straight from their Clove Bar to the hottub.

Despite its remote location, the Wi-Fi is fast and reliable, though truthfully, this is the kind of place where you’ll want to disconnect. It’s a proper luxury retreat. Tranquil, cinematic, and deeply romantic.

No comfort has been overlooked. No convenience spared.

The Food

Ulekan, a Canggu favorite known for its upscale Indonesian fusion, brings its signature flavors to the mountains with an on-site restaurant at Munduk Cabins. The partnership feels seamless—the food is elevated yet deeply authentic, refined but still connected to tradition. In many ways, it mirrors the essence of Munduk Cabins itself.

In addition to the restaurant, the property is also home to Clove Bar, which offers daily happy hour and a cocktail list that rivals any in Bali. You’ll still find some of Ulekan’s best-loved drinks here, including the Old Man Kretek—a smoky, spiced take on an Old Fashioned that has earned its place as one of our all-time favorite cocktails on the island.

Breakfast is included, and best enjoyed on your private balcony, robe on, coffee in hand, as the sun spills gold across the valley.

For cozier nights in, in-room dining features a separate menu of charcuterie boards, seasonal soups, and Western comforts—all perfect for enjoying fireside or on your private deck as the mist rolls in. Munduk Cabins has the kind of vibe where moody weather doesn’t ruin the experience—it becomes the experience. Staying in is its own kind of luxury.

The Property

Munduk Cabins is a small boutique resort, and while it doesn’t offer a sprawling list of amenities, everything it does offer is done exceptionally well. The focus here is quality over quantity, and you feel that intention in every detail.

At the heart of the property is a shared pool and a large hillside hot tub, both with uninterrupted views of the mountains rolling into the Indian Ocean beyond. As the sun begins its descent, guests slip into the hot tub with cocktails in hand, seeking warmth as the highland air turns crisp. It’s intimate, unhurried, and quietly romantic.

Next to the pool is a communal fire pit, where couples gather in the evenings to roast marshmallows and share quiet conversation under the stars, with the soft hum of cicadas and rustling trees as the only background noise.

The Service

While Bali is famous for its warm hospitality and the ever-present smile on nearly every local’s face, service on the island can often be—let’s just say—leisurely. That’s not the case at Munduk Cabins.

From the moment you check in, you’re added to a dedicated WhatsApp group with the staff, making communication seamless. Whether you need help arranging a motorbike, a driver, a yoga class, or even a custom day tour, all it takes is a quick message. The team is prompt, professional, and genuinely eager to help.

In fact, the service here is some of the best we’ve experienced in Bali. And that warmth seems to be a common thread among the people of Munduk. There’s a sincerity to their kindness—one that stands out, especially as some parts of the island become increasingly jaded by overtourism.

Munduk, by contrast, feels untouched. Locals are still deeply proud of their village and genuinely grateful for the few travelers who make the journey up into the hills. Their hospitality isn’t performative—it’s personal.

The Surroundings

Munduk is home to some of Bali’s most breathtaking waterfalls—and there’s certainly no shortage of them. Sekumpul, often dubbed the biggest (and boldest) waterfall in Bali, is about a 50-minute drive from Munduk Cabins. While it’s a popular day trip destination, early risers are rewarded; arrive before the crowds, and you might just have this otherworldly scene entirely to yourself.

Closer to home is the Munduk Waterfall Trek, a lesser-known jungle trail that winds past four stunning waterfalls. Entrance fees are minimal, and the path remains blissfully uncrowded—a far cry from the shoulder-to-shoulder trails of Ubud. It’s a peaceful, nature-filled way to explore the mountains on foot.

Munduk is also home to one of Bali’s most iconic temples, the one you’ve likely seen gracing postcards and guidebooks: Ulun Danu Beratan Temple. Sitting serenely in the middle of Lake Beratan, it’s especially magical at sunrise when the lake is still and the morning light casts a soft glow over the water.

I recommend spending your days here chasing waterfalls, wandering through jungle paths, and soaking in the quiet beauty of Bali’s highlands. I’ve written a full post on what to explore in the area, and trust me—it’s worth carving out time for.

Eco Efforts

I make an effort to travel consciously, and Munduk Cabins checks every box. Recognized year after year as one of Bali’s most sustainable stays, the property is deeply committed to both the environment and the local community.

From eco-friendly building practices to thoughtful waste management and water conservation, sustainability isn’t just a checkbox here—it’s woven into the entire experience. Beyond that, they actively support the surrounding Balinese villages, sourcing locally and creating meaningful opportunities for the people who call this region home.

It’s a luxury stay you can truly feel good about.

Overall

Location: Munduk, Bali, Indonesia

Rating: 4 Star | Boutique luxury | Rooms start at $275/night

Perfect for: Couples’ retreats, nature lovers, romantic getaways.

The vibe: Elevated treehouse meets modern mountain retreat, with moody highland air, cinematic sunsets, and a deep sense of calm.

My review: Munduk Cabins is one of my favorite hotels in all of Bali. There’s something mystical about it—an almost otherworldly calm that’s hard to put into words. It’s earthy, romantic, and beautifully secluded—everything you could want in a retreat.

This is the place where Keanu and I first said I love you, and where we’ve returned to celebrate anniversaries ever since. It holds a special kind of magic that makes it more than just a beautiful stay—it becomes part of your story.

It’s also the perfect place to name-drop when someone claims they’ve “seen all of Bali.” Chances are, they haven’t made it here yet.
