It’s a little more expensive than your average bar, but honestly? Worth it. The cocktails are elevated, the vibe is laid-back but elegant, and the terrace feels like the kind of place you’d expect to find in a Bond film (fitting, since Matera was one of the filming locations). Zipa Café

My absolute favorite spot in Matera. Zipa Café is carved right into the rocks of an ancient church—yes, really—and somehow feels equal parts cozy and epic. You walk in and immediately want to stay awhile. The vibe is effortlessly cool, the cocktails are solid, and the views? Insane. You’re basically perched on the edge of the world, staring out over the Sassi with the golden light hitting just right.

A bit of a hidden gem. Terrazza Cavaliere has a spacious terrace that looks straight out over Sasso Barisano and the rolling hills of the Alta Murgia. It’s the kind of place you stumble on and immediately feel like you’ve found the view. The vibe is relaxed, the staff are friendly, and while it’s not overly fancy, it nails that classic Italian charm.

Perfect for a late afternoon drink when you want to kick back, soak in the scenery, and feel like you’re living in a postcard. One of the best casual spots to take in Matera’s skyline without the crowds.

Your hotel balcony

One of the best decisions I made in Matera? Booking a stay with a private balcony overlooking the city. I grabbed a bottle of bubbly and watched the sun dip below the horizon as the lights of the Sassi slowly flickered on, one by one. It felt like I had a front-row seat to something timeless.

If you can swing it, I highly recommend choosing a hotel with a view—it takes the whole experience to another level.
